Jaipur Events & Festivals

The city of Jaipur takes on a highly colorful and intriguing image during its annual festivities. Beginning in the month of January, the celebration of the Kite Festival takes place by flying different sized and shaped kites, all competing for first place. The original, one-of-a-kind kites decorating the sky provide an entertaining scene for all onlookers. Following suit with this event is the Desert Kite Festival, which is celebrated every five years as a means for expert kite makers to flaunt their talents. Shortly after in March is the prominent Elephant Festival – located at the Chaugan Ground, the event is undoubtedly larger than the elephants themselves! Complete with live musical performances, polo matches, tug of war, elephant races and a shockingly unique parade of decorated elephants, the interactive aspects make this a truly memorable experience. A picture with the Best Decorated Elephant contest winner is a great way to end the festivities. The touching and timeless festivities of the Gangaur Festival also take place for two weeks in the month of March. The celebration is dedicated to Gauri, who originates from the Goddess Parvati. The women of Jaipur gather to pray, sing songs, dance and share gifts of sweets and money. A parade carries the image of Gauri alongside traditionally clothed camels, elephants and horses – a definite sight worth seeing. Jaipur’s women also warmly welcome the feminine Teej event, celebrated each year in July. Teej is a time of exchanging sweets, gifts, and offerings to both one another as well as to the Goddess Parvati in thankfulness for happiness in marriage. Rope swings decorated by flowers are used by the gracious women.
